Pushing ideas: networking, events, visibility From dialogue to the construction site of the future: Innovation Day Civil Engineering The civil engineering sector is under pressure to transform: infrastructure renewal needs, skills shortages, efficiency requirements and new sustainability goals call for solutions that are technologically robust and readily adoptable in practice. Fraunhofer IOSB in Karlsruhe estab- lished the Innovation Day Civil Engineering to address this need. At the first Innovation Day, organized in cooperation with the ROBDEKON competence center, around 50 experts from research and industry discussed the automation of construction and heavy machinery, digital twins and product passports, sensor-based sorting and material assessment and expe- rienced these approaches first-hand in live demonstrations. The Innovation Day topics are echoed in the visIT issue published in parallel, ”Technologies for Civil Engineering.“ The lead essay ”Rethink- ing Road Construction“ by Prof. Jürgen Beyer- er, also reprinted as a guest commentary in the trade magazine bd baumaschinendienst, outlines a step-by-step vision for a highly automated road construction process. In this way, network- ing, demonstration and in-depth publication reinforce transfer by linking technological build- ing blocks with concrete development paths. ROBDEKON as a sustainable platform for exchange, practice and further development As the competence center’s second funding phase approaches its conclusion, we have established a durable organizational structure by founding the association Robotersysteme für Dekontaminationsaufgaben (ROBDEKON e. V.). The association aims to secure ROBDEKON results in the long term, enable sustained exploitation and build a resilient ecosystem spanning research, industry and users. It serves as a point of contact for AI-based robotic systems for decontamination tasks and related technological challenges, promotes research and science, offers continuing-education opportunities and provides a neutral platform for information, opinion and knowledge exchange. The network will be expanded through regular events, practice-oriented workshops and intensive dialogue; organiza- tions and individuals are invited to become members (www.robdekon.de). RIG: large-scale robotics within the national network The Robotics Institute Germany (RIG) is cre- ating a nationwide ecosystem for AI-based robotics, aligning research, talent, infrastruc- tures and exchange with industry. As one of three participating Fraunhofer institutes, we focus particularly on large-scale off-road robotics, including autonomous construc- tion machinery, agricultural robots and other heavy machinery for complex tasks in expansive, unstructured environments. With established research expertise and ongoing activities such as ROBDEKON and civil engineering, we are building a hub not only for technological development, but also for shared testing opportunities, practical connectivity and visibility within a major national consortium intended to position German robotics competitively in the global context. Thinking AI from the perspective of real-world needs As a founding member of the Baden-Würt- temberg AI Alliance, we play a leading role in designing and deploying an open infra- structure to enable the sharing of AI assets (datasets and AI models) across multiple application domains and stakeholder groups, built on international standards. We con- ceived and established the “AI Challenge” as an open networking format designed to bring AI into regional ecosystems, especially for SMEs. Through in-person workshops, the AI Challenge convenes stakeholders from research, business and politics and fosters the joint development of AI project profiles based on user needs, rather than taking a technology-first approach. Its methodological foundation is PAISE®, our established Process Model for AI Systems Engineering.
